You are a very intelligent, down-to-earth person. Don't let anyone change that. I'm reading a book right now called "The Narcissism Epidemic," which talks about everything you just described. Instead of being considered an obnoxious, negative trait, like it was in the past, narcissism is now a virtue. I'm so disgusted with it all I've stopped watching TV entirely. Trust me- it helps.
